Lesson 38: Whoops! Jun 15th, 2006

On this show, we discussed the phrasal verb “to come across”, the humidity of “Tsuyu” or the rainy season in Japan, and Bob talked about the latest skypecast. Also, a big SORRY and a big mistake on our part because we started the podcast with our main mikes switched off. It was not until later in the show that we came across this blunder and realized that we were only using the laptop’s mike, so sorry about the poor sound quality early on. Blame Bob.

Skypecast
Bob talked about the skypecast , which was a success with about a dozen members taking part. Basically, it was decided that technology for learning language is extremely useful simply because there is so much content online. Bob feels that future skypcasts could be organized and managed by participants themselves.

Extra Language
Bungling / Incompetent: Both these adjectives mean the same thing; making many mistakes.
bearing with someone: to have the patience while someone prepares or gets ready to do something or join someone.

Phrasal Verb
“to come across” can be intransitive or inseparable. It has several meanings:
1) it can mean to discover something by accident e.g.: We came across this great bar in Tokyo last week.
2) it can mean to initially seem or have the appearance e.g.: He came across as rude, but actually he isn’t.
3) it can also express ideas or emotions clearly in film, writing and music e.g: Her ideas come across with great force in the book.
