15. Detwiije - Le Guerre des Mondes

A song that is titled “The War of the Worlds” needs to be suitably epic to fulfill any preconceptions that such a loaded title conjures up. Thankfully, the Anglo-Belgian group collectively known as Detwiije do not disappoint with the soaring call to arms of “La Guerre Des Mondes.” It is a beautiful and ferocious serenade to an impending apocalypse, with screeching guitars, walls of heavy feedback, expert violin work, and crashing drums capturing the spirit of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, acting as the soundtrack to buildings tumbling down and streets catching on fire. Although the band threw in the towel before they were fully recognized for their work, tracks like “La Guerre Des Mondes” will certainly live on long past Detwiije's time. (James Ould)
